Lightly sweet, couse, southern style cornbread.

Recipe Ingredients for Cornbread, scratch

1/2 cup flour, self-rising
1/2 cup cornmeal, self-rising
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup whole milk
3/4 cup water
1 large egg
1 tablespoon shortening

Recipe Directions for Cornbread, scratch

  1. Put shortening in cast iron skillet and place in 400 degree, preheated oven.

  2. Mix all remaining ingredients in bowl.

  3. Beat vigorously for about one minute. When shortening is melted and skillet is hot, pour 1/2 tablespoon into mixture and stir until thoroughly blended.

  4. Pour mixture into skillet and bake until golden brown (about 30 minutes).
