Recipe Ingredients for Classic Lasagna

52 grams Butter
32 grams Wheat Flour, White, All-purpose, Enriched, Bleached
2.5 cup Milk, Reduced Fat, Fluid, 2% Milkfat
1 tsp Nutmeg, Ground
39 grams Butter
1 cup, chopped Onions
0.5 cup, diced Celery
0.25 cup, chopped Carrots
5 slice Hickory Smoked Ham
1 portion ( yield from 1/2 lb raw meat ) Beef, Ground, 85% Lean Meat / 15% Fat, Crumbles
149 grams Ground Pork, Fresh
1 glass (3.5 fl oz) Wine, Table, White
2 cup Diced Tomatoes
1 cup Chicken Stock
2 tbsp Tomato Paste
0.5 tsp Oregano, Ground
6 sheets Pasta Lasagne

Recipe Directions for Classic Lasagna

  1. First make Bechamel sauce. In a saucepan melt butter. Add flour and stir to combine. Cook for 3 minutes. Then add the hot milk and cook, shisking occasionally for 3-5 minutes until thickened and lightly coating the back of a spoon.

  2. Season to taste w/ salt, pepper and nutmeg and set aside.

  3. For the meat sauce, in a skillet melt remaining butter. Add onions, celery and carrots and cook, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes.

  4. Add smoked ham and cook for another 5 minutes.

  5. Add ground beef and port, and white wine - stir to combine and reduce 1 minute.

  6. Add tomatoes, chicken stock, tomato paste, 1 bay leaf, oregano, salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1 hour.

  8. Preheat over to 175C. Brush bottom and sides of a baking dish with butter. Spread a layer of meat sauce evenly over bottom of pan.

  9. Add 1 cup sauce, smoothing over meat sauce. Add 1/3 lasagna sheets. Continue with 3 more layers. Sprinkle top with parmesan cheese.

  10. Bake 30 minutes or until cheese is bubbling.
