Recipe Ingredients for Classic Black Bean Chili

1 red onion
1 lb hamburger
2 tsp. minced roasted garlic
1 jalapeno pepper, minced
1 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp ground black pepper
1 tsp basil
2 bell peppers, cut into 1-inch chunks
8 oz sliced mushrooms
15 oz canned corn
15 oz black beans
15 oz pinto beans
28 oz diced tomatoes
15 oz tomato sauce
1/3 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup Frank's hot sauce
5 oz tomato paste

Recipe Directions for Classic Black Bean Chili

  1. Put a large, nonstick stew pot on medium-high heat.

  2. Add the onion to the pot and stir.

  3. Once the onions are sweating, add the garlic, jalapeno, and ground beef. Break up the beef with your cooking utensil and mix well with the onion, jalapeno, and garlic.

  4. Sprinkle the chili powder and black pepper onto the meat mixture and stir.

  5. Allow the meat to brown.

  6. When the meat is thoroughly cooked, add the peppers and mushrooms to the pot. Stir. Allow vegetables to cook a bit.

  7. Stir in the corn and beans.

  8. Now it's time to pour on the liquids: the stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, Frank's, and tomato paste. Stir to combine all ingredients.

  9. Allow chili to simmer for at least half an hour, to allow the flavors to meld.

  10. Serve with some cornbread or whole grain tortilla chips - delicious!
