This is a very basic recipe for Cholent - pretty much a Sabbath standard. I make this in a 5 quart crockpot, so am figuring about 1 c finished serving size, since some volume is lost in cooking. I suggest using a crockpot liner to help with cleanup.

Recipe Ingredients for Cholent (basic recipe)

1200 g potatoes (raw)
200 g barley (dry weight)
315 g beans (dry weight)
280 g onion
16 oz flanken(lean)
80 g ketchup
40 g onion soup mix
6 c water (adjust as needed)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp ground black pepper

Recipe Directions for Cholent (basic recipe)

  1. Pre-soak the beans (boil 1 minute, let stand 1 hour)Wash and cut the potatoes into chunks

  2. Wash the barley and check for stones/etc.

  3. Place everything in a crockpot, stir slightly, and leave on low for about 24 hours.
