Cheeseboard (Berkeley, CA) chocolate chip scones

Recipe Ingredients for Chocolate Chip Scones

1 3/4 c flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tbsp baking powder
1/4 tsp kosher salt
3/8 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup chocolate chips
3/8 cup buttermilk
3/8 cup milk

Recipe Directions for Chocolate Chip Scones

  1. Preheat oven to 375 deg; line baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Sift flour, baking powder, and baking soda into large bowl.

  3. Add salt and sugar and mix

  4. Add cold butter and cut in with pastry cutter until it is the size of small peas.

  5. Mix in the chocolate chips.

  6. Make a well in the center of the ingredients and add the liquids. Mix briefly, only until ingredients come together. (Some loose flour may remain at bottom of bowl.)

  7. Shape the dough into balls about 2 inches in diameter (they should have a rough, rocky exterior) and place on parchment about 2 inches apart.

  8. Sprinkle the tops with additional sugar (optional) and cook in the center of oven for 25 - 30 minutes, until golden brown. (A blast of initial heat for first half of cooking time (i.e. on bottom rack of gas-oven) provides better rise and shape to scones.) Transfer to wire rack to cool.
