Our family's traditional birthday cake.

Recipe Ingredients for Chocolate Cake

6 ounces unsweetened chocolate
3 cups flour
3 eggs
3/4 tsp vanilla
1/4 lb butter
1/8 lb butter
3 cups sugar
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup sour cream
2 1/4 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 cups boiling water

Butter Frosting:
2 cups icing sugar
4 tbsp margarine
3 tbsp whole milk
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp salt

Recipe Directions for Chocolate Cake

  1. Melt butter and chocolate over hot water.

  2. Stir in the sugar, vanilla, salt and eggs once the melted mixture has cooled.

  3. Mix together baking soda with sour cream and add in 3 parts, alternating with flour, mixing well between additions. (A mixer is really handy as the batter gets stiff).

  4. Add the boiling water. Batter will be thin.

  5. Pour into greased and lined oblong pan.

  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 56 minutes.

  7. Cool and Ice with Butter Frosting.
