Recipe Ingredients for Chinese Pretzel (Tong Wan)

8 ounces cornstarch
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1 1/4 cup water
1 egg, beaten
36 tsp frying oil

Recipe Directions for Chinese Pretzel (Tong Wan)

  1. Heat oil to 365 degrees.

  2. Place Chinese Pretzel Iron into oil.

  3. Sift together cornstarch, sugar, flour and salt.

  4. Combine evaporated milk, water and egg; add to dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Let batter sit a few minutes to thicken.

  5. Remove iron from oil and drip-dry for a few seconds.

  6. Dip iron in batter about 2/3 to 3/4. Remove batter-covered iron and dip in oil. Fry until batter has turned a light golden-brown; pretzel should be delicately crispy.

  7. Drain pretzel on paper towels.
