Whole wheat Indian-style flatbread.

Recipe Ingredients for Chapatis

3/4 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp canola oil

Recipe Directions for Chapatis

  1. Mix flour and salt with water and knead in the oil.

  2. Knead for 5 minutes or until smooth.

  3. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp dish towel and allow to rest for 30 minutes. Turn out onto a floured surface and divide into six equal pieces.

  4. Press the six piece into balls then rounds of about five inches in diameter. Stack, layered between moist plastic wrap to keep moist.

  5. Heat a griddle over medium heat until hot. Take one chapati, brush off excess flour and place on the griddle. Cook for 30-60 seconds, until the top begins to bubble and white specks appear on the underside.

  6. Turn the chapati over using a metal spatula, and cook for another 30 seconds. Remove from the pan and keep warm. Can be brushed with butter immediately after cooking.
