Recipe Ingredients for Chana dal khichari

1080 grams Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans, Bengal Gram), Mature Seeds, Canned
6 serving India's own brown basmati 3/4 cup cooked
6 1/2 cup (8 fl oz) Water
2 tsp Turmeric, Ground
1 tbsp Dill Weed, Dried
5 g Garam Masala Powder
6 tsp Ghee Clarified Butter
4 tsp Cumin Seed
4 pepper Peppers, Hot Chile, Sun-dried
1/2 serving Asafoetida 1 tsp
4 medium whole (2-3/5" dia) Tomatoes, Red, Ripe
1 tsp Sea Salt

Recipe Directions for Chana dal khichari

  1. soak dal for 5 hours, then drain OR use 2 large cans of Chick Peas. Clean basmati.

  2. Place the dal, rice, water, turmeric, dill, and garam masala in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to to low, partially cover and slowly cook for 1 - 1 1/2 hours or until the dal is soft and water is absorbed. Remove from heat.

  3. Chop the Tomatoes into 8ths.

  4. Heat the ghee in a small saucepan over moderate heat, stir in cumin seeds and chili when hot. Fry until the cumin seeds are brown. Sprinkle the asafetida powder and immediately add the tomato pieces. Fry for 1-2 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft and glisten with ghee. Pour the fried seasoning into the cooked dal, stir in salt and serve.
