Recipe Ingredients for Challah Braid

1/2 cup water
1 egg
2 cups flour, weston's
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp sugar
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tsp yeast, fleischmann's

Recipe Directions for Challah Braid

  1. The water quantity above is an estimate. In reality, put an egg into a measuring cup and add water to reach 3/4 cup.

  2. Put items into a bread machine in the usual order.

  3. Select the Sweet Dough cycle (1hr36 for me).

  4. Once the dough is ready, roll into a long rope about 1/2" thick. Cut into two pieces, 2/3 and 1/3 of the whole length, respectively.

  5. Make a "V" with the 2/3 piece, place one end of the other at the point of the "V", and braid.

  6. Allow to rise, covered, for about 40 mins.

  7. Bake at 375F for about 15 minutes.

  8. Optional: "paint" with milk and sprinkle poppy seeds or coarse salt before baking.
