An awesome recipe from our awesome roommate. You can use 1/4-1/2c honey. Use your discretion with the nuts- we prefer walnuts and pistachios, though walnuts and almonds will also be delicious.

Recipe Ingredients for Carlie's Baklava

1 cup butter
1/2 lb Twin Fresh Paks Fillo Dough
2 egg whites
1/2 cup sugar
4 cups chopped nuts
1 tsp orange extract
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1/4 cup honey

Recipe Directions for Carlie's Baklava

  1. Line a jelly roll pan with parchment paper, a silpat, or grease well. Preheat the oven to 350F.

  2. Mix the egg, 1/2c sugar, chopped nuts, and orange extract.

  3. Melt the butter. Put down six layers of defrosted phyllo and brush with butter to wet thoroughly. Put down a layer of filling, then continue to alternate phyllo and filling until both are used up. The top layer should be phyllo.

  4. Cut the baklava into the desired number of pieces and bake at 350F until phyllo is golden brown.

  5. While the baklava is baking, heat the remaining sugar, water, and honey on the stove to dissolve the sugar.

  6. When the baklava is done, pour the syrup over it and allow to cool before serving.
