Classic combination of tomato, basil and cheese on a whole-wheat roll

Recipe Ingredients for Caprese sandwich

1/2 c gold medal whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp splenda
1/4 tsp salt
50 ml warm water
2 slices fat-free swiss cheese
1/4 tomato, sliced
3 leaves basil, fresh

Recipe Directions for Caprese sandwich

  1. Start water boiling under a steamer, preferably bamboo

  2. Mix flour, baking powder, splenda and salt in a bowl

  3. Add warm water and knead dough until it is the consistency of an earlobe. Add small amounts of extra water or flour if necessary

  4. Shape dough into an ovoid dome, place on a piece of parchment paper or aluminum foil and put it into the steamer

  5. Steam for 8-10 minutes

  6. While roll is steaming, prepare cheese and basil and slice the tomato

  7. When it is finished, remove roll from steamer and slice in half

  8. Assemble the sandwich!

  9. Note: I know this recipe is a little odd because people aren't used to steamed bread, but give it a try! This technique has been used in China for over a thousand years and even in early America when ovens were scarce. If you're still not comfortable, feel free to bake your roll or use pre-made bread.
