How many calories does fidgeting burn?
Asked by anonymous on Jun 06, 2009 in Weight Loss

I bounce my legs pretty much anytime I am sitting with my feet on the floor.  How many calories am I burning?

Fidgeting really helps to burn calories because you're moving muscles all day long.  In fact, calories burned while fidgeting are classified as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). The number of calories you burn depends on the speed and duration of your foot tapping, as well as on your weight and age, but I’d venture to guess that fidgeting burns about 120 calories an hour, the same as writing while seating at a desk.  Read about NEAT calories in the Experts section under the Advice tab.
