Different Types of Croutons

A walk through the supermarket will reveal several varieties of croutons. Most popular when incorporated into salads, these different varieties can spice up your plain green salad, but at the cost of adding calories without adding many nutrients. These small pieces of bread can be seasoned with various herbs and spices which influence it’s caloric content. In general, an ounce of unseasoned croutons yields around 120 calories, while seasoned ones can yield at least 50 more. An ounce also provides anywhere from 20-25 carbohydrates, and a small amount of protein and fat. It is important to watch the sodium content, especially in seasoned varieties, which can have almost 500 mg per ounce! Check the nutrition label before buying to choose the healthiest variety to add to your salads.

Make Your Own Croutons

If croutons encourage you to eat more salad, you may want to consider making your own low calorie croutons to enjoy. These are great to make with leftover bread, especially whole-wheat bread since it will add more fiber to the diet. Start with brushing on a light coating of olive oil and cutting into small one-inch squares. Then make a mixture of your favorite spices like basil leaves, garlic powder, or chili powder and bake in the oven until slightly browned around the edges.
