What Are Croissants Made Of?

A soft and buttery croissant is a common part of a breakfast meal. This flaky bread roll is made from yeast-leavened dough that is layered with butter and then folded a few times. Many times it is also filled with sweet spreads and jellies, such as chocolate, strawberry and other berries, or even meat and greens such as spinach. Although there are many types of croissants, general nutrition facts may be shocking due to the high calorie, carbohydrate, and fat count. A large croissant can have more than 270 calories and 17 grams of fat, about a third of which is saturated fat. With additions like butter and spreads adding to these numbers, it may be wise to choose healthier options like whole-wheat bread instead.

Eating A Healthier Croissant

What to eat with croissants plays a huge role in determining the nutritional content. Although whole wheat bread, English muffins, or pita are some healthier options to replace the croissant with, you can still try to make it healthier when you do choose to have one. Opt for plain croissants rather than flavored ones like chocolate, and stay away from sugary fillings and spreads like fruit jams and jellies. If you do choose to get a stuffed croissant, greens like spinach are always a good choice for added vitamins, like vitamin A. Be sure to enjoy in moderation!
