What Is In Cocktail Sauce?

Sometimes referred to as seafood cocktail, cocktail sauce is a popular side to most seafood dishes in restaurants and at home. The nutrition content of this condiment depends on the ingredients used. In America, the most common bases include either ketchup or chili sauce with the addition of horseradish. In countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and more, mayonnaise is added, resulting in a product of lighter color and higher fat and calorie content. In general, in moderation this sauce can be a healthy part of a seafood dish.

How to Make Your Own Sauce

In reality, restaurants and diners aren’t the only places you are likely to enjoy a delicious seafood dish. If you cook fish, shrimp, or any other type of seafood at home, you may feel like whipping up your own low calorie cocktail sauce to go along with it. The recipe is simple and only takes a few minutes. Mix together about a half-cup of ketchup, 1 tablespoon or so of prepared horseradish, and a squeeze of juice from a fresh lemon. Add spices as you sit fit. Let the mixture sit in the refrigerator to cool, and enjoy!
