Carbonated drinks include any beverage that contains the gas carbon dioxide, which creates bubbles in the drink. Popular carbonated drinks include spring water, beer, and soda. As you can already guess from that list, carbonation can be natural, as in the case of spring water or beer, or artificial, as in the case of soda. Many people like the fizzy sensation that comes with carbonation, but are carbonated drinks bad for you? It was thought that naturally carbonated drinks, primarily spring water, can have soothing effects for upset stomachs, as well as other medicinal properties. However, there have been studies that investigated if carbonated drinks are bad for your teeth, kidneys, and calcium levels. Results have shown that spring water and artificial spring water don’t have an affect, but soda does.

Do Carbonated Drinks Cause Weight Gain?

Carbonated drinks such as soda and beer, when consumed in excess, have been shown to cause weight gain! Soda is filled with sugar and beer with many empty calories, both of which can cause additional pounds around the waistline. Sweetened soda has also been shown to contribute to tooth decay, and even diet versions have been shown to have detrimental health effects. Healthier alternatives include seltzer, sparkling, club, and tonic water.
