Is Bacon Good For You?

Whether you cook bacon at home or order it in a restaurant, be it strips for breakfast or mixed into salads, you may have wondered: is bacon healthy or is bacon unhealthy? To answer these questions, a look at what is in bacon can help. Bacon is meat from a pig that, for flavoring and preservation, has been treated with salt, nitrites, or sugar and may have been smoked. Although it is alright to incorporate into the diet in moderation, there are adverse health effects of bacon. Those with heart disease or high blood pressure should steer away from it. Bacon contains nitrites, which have been shown to cause cancer in animal studies, and high sodium content (1 slice may contain 150 mg of sodium). Additionally, the answer to the question of “is bacon fattening” is yes! Bacon is high in fat, especially saturated fat, which has been linked to increased risk of heart disease.

Healthy Alternative to Bacon

When buying bacon, one can choose to buy low calorie bacon and low sodium bacon, which is just as delicious but contains less calories and salt. When preparing, dab the fat off the cooked product to decrease the fat content, and avoid adding any salt of your own. For an even healthier alternative try turkey bacon, which is overall lower in calories and fat, but tastes just as good!
