I had to convert the cabbage to cups for the recipe analyzer but you actually need a whole cabbage. I use a savoy cabbage. This is an old family recipe, hence the butter, but you can cook it with tomato sauce for a lower calorie version.

Recipe Ingredients for cabbage rolls

1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground pork
1 cup rice
2 eggs
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium onion, diced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
3 cups cabbage
1/4 lb butter

Recipe Directions for cabbage rolls

  1. Cook rice in advance according to package directions. You need about 2 cups of cooked rice. Allow the rice to cool completely

  2. Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Blanch the entire cabbage, for a few minutes. Remove whole leaves once the cabbage is soft enough, returning the cabbage to the water to soften the next few layers etc.

  3. In a large bowl, combine the beef, pork, rice, eggs, onion, garlic, salt and pepper and mix completely

  4. Form cabbage rolls by putting a small amount of the meat mixture into a cabbage leaf and folding it up.

  5. This should make about 20 cabbage rolls.

  6. Place some cabbage leaves in the bottom of a medium baking dish - One with a lid and big enough to hold 10 rolls in a layer and deep enough for 2 layers

  7. Pack 1/2 the cabbage rolls into the pan so that they touch. Dot with a good half of the butter. Pack the remaining cabbage rolls in a second layer and dot with the remaining butter. Layer more cabbage leaves on the top. Put the lid on the pan and bake for 90 minutes at 325 degrees F.

  8. Serve with sour cream.
