Recipe Ingredients for Cabbage burgers

2 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
1 package yeast
3 tbsp water
1 tbsp sugar
4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 onion
2 stalks celery

Recipe Directions for Cabbage burgers

  1. Scald milk and other ingredients. Cool to lukewarm.

  2. Soften 1 pkg. yeast in 3 Tbsp. warm water and 1 tsp. sugar. Add yeast to milk- mix with 5 cups flour (can put in 1 cup whole wheat) to make a soft dough. Knead til smooth. Place dough in a greased bowl. Let rise 1 hour or 2.

  3. Meanwhile, shred 1 small head cabbage. Grate a carrot or two. 1 chopped onion, and chopped celery (opt.) Brown 1 1/2 lbs. ground beef or sausage or combo. Drain grease. Add veggies and cook until tender (may add a little water). Let mixture cool.

  4. Tear off small handfuls of dough, roll out to thin. Place 1/2 cup cabbage mixture in center. Bring side together, pinch closed.

  5. Place seam-down on greased pan. Let rise, brush tops with butter (melted). Bake 20 mins. at 400.
