The night before you are going to serve your casserole, butter the slices of bread. Place the bread slices, buttered side down, in the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle the cheese and any add-ins over the bread. In a small bowl, beat the eggs. Add the milk, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix together; then pour this mixture in the pan. Cover the pan and put it in the refrigerator until the next morning. Remove the cover and bake the casserole at 325 degrees for 40 minutes. Serve immediately. Suggested add-ins: cooked, crumbled sausage or bacon; diced ham; mushrooms; diced onion or peppers; tomatoes; chopped, drained spinach or broccoli.
