Hand written recipe by Leona "Gommey" Henderson Wood, of Troy Alabama, Grandmother of Patricia Barnes, aka Sister Shurgert 1 quart sweet milk, 1 cup lard, 1 cup sugar - bring to boling point. Remove from fire and when luke warm dissolve in it 1 cake of yeast - sift in eniugh flour to make consistency of cake batter, about a heaping quart - 3 cups flour. Put in warm place 2 hours. Then sift in 1 tablespoon salt, 1 rounded teaspoon soda, 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder. Work in about 1 quart, (2 1/2 cups), flour or until you can handle the dough. Shape or cut into as many rolls as you wish for that meal. Put in a warm place to rise 2 hours before baking. Put remainder of dough in refrigerator as ???????

Recipe Ingredients for Bread, Everlasting Rolls Sister Shurbert's

2 cups milk, 1 quart "sweet milk"
1 cup lard, can sub crisco
1 cup sugar
4 teaspoons dry yeast, (1 cake yeast)
3 cups flour, about 1 heaping quart
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda, rounded
1 teaspoon baking powder, heaping
2 1/2 cups flour, about 1 quart
1/2 stick butter, melted for dipping

Recipe Directions for Bread, Everlasting Rolls Sister Shurbert's

  1. In a heavy sauce pan combine milk, lard and sugar, bring to boiling point while stirring.

  2. Remove from fire and when luke warm dissolve in it 1 cake of yeast.

  3. Sift in enough flour to make consistency of cake batter, about 1 heaping quart. Put in a warm place for 2 hours.

  4. Then sift in 1 tablespoon salt, 1 rounded teaspoon soda, and 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder. Work in about 1 quart of flour or until you can handle the dough.

  5. Shape or cut into as many rolls as you wish for that meal. Put in a warm place to rise 2 hours before baking.

  6. Bake in 400 oven on bottom rack 12 - 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

  7. THIS ORIGIONAL RECIPE CONTAINS NO EGGS

  8. Cut with 2" cutter, pull into oval 2 1/2" long, dip one side in butter, fold over on flour side, place 10 rolls with folded (open side) down against outside of 8" round cake pan, place 5 rolls inside first ring and 1 roll in center for 16 rolls per pan. This recipe makes 4 pans of 16 rolls each.
