Actual original adjusted below obtained from Laura Arnold: Moms Original White Bread Recipe 4 sifters full of flour 2 cakes yeast (soaked in half cup of water) 1/3 cup sugar 2 TBL salt 1/4 cup shortening 4-5 cups of water or potatoe water(makes heavier bread) Soak yeast in warm water. Sift together flour, salt and sugar. Melt shortening add to flour and cream together with your hands. Pour in yeast, water and other water, mix together well. Let rise about ten minutes. Then knead dough again. Let rise until double in bulk; punch down. Let rise until high again, then cut into loaves, let rise in pans one hour. Put touch of lard on top of loaf, bake for about 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees. Mom always said this made five to six loaves of bread. I guess it depends on what size of loaf pans you use.
