Recipe Ingredients for Boston Brown Bread

1 cup cornmeal
1 cup rye flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups buttermilk
2/3 cup molasses
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup black walnuts
1 oz. brandy

Recipe Directions for Boston Brown Bread

  1. Combine dry ingredients. Make a well in the center and add milk and molasses. Mix thoroughly until batter is smooth. Stir in raisins/nuts.

  2. Bake in oiled cans (filled 3/4 full, no more) or greased baking pan in 350-degree oven for about an hour, or until a broom straw inserted in the center comes out clean.

  3. Cool for 15 minutes before removing from can or pan. Serve warm; slice with string.
