Beef and Onion Pie Recipe

A hearty meal for a cold day, that my kids actually like! You could buy some short crust pastry if you wanted, but it is really easy to make. Also to spice it try making a gravy at the end by simmering 1 chopped tomato, reserved stock and chili, 2tb flour and .25 cup water.

Recipe Ingredients for Beef and Onion Pie

2 onions, chopped
750 g beef, diced
1 canned tomatoes, chopped
2 c beef stock
1 c flour
1/4 c butter
1 egg

Recipe Directions for Beef and Onion Pie

  1. Saute onions and garlic.

  2. Brown beef covered for 15 min.

  3. Add tomatoes and season.

  4. Add stock.and simmer for 1.5h covered.

  5. Short crust pastry:

  6. Mix flour and pinch salt.

  7. Cut butter into small pieces.

  8. Mix with fingers in 1c flour until it looks like breadcrumbs.

  9. Mix .25 cup water and .5t lemon juice into flour.

  10. Knead into a stiff dough.

  11. Wrap in cling and refridgerate for 1 hour.

  12. Combine 2tb flour and .25 cup water.

  13. Remove 2 cups of sauce for gravy.

  14. Stir into beef and thicken then cool.

  15. Place mixture in a pie dish.

  16. Roll out dough to 3mm thickness.

  17. Cover dish and pinch edges to seal.

  18. Brush with egg to brown.

  19. Bake at 180 for 30 min.
