basic cooked beans from scratch - I will use these in soups and with rice

Recipe Ingredients for basic red beans

16 oz Beans Pinto
360 grams Onions
1 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 clove Garlic

Recipe Directions for basic red beans

  1. soak the beans overnight after sorting and discarding any foreign matter or old, dried beans

  2. the following day, pour off the water and rinse the beans well

  3. place the beans in the pot and cover 1 inch more than the top of the beans

  4. bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer and cook

  5. check for doneness after 1 hour and continue cooking in 30 minute increments until tender

  6. sautee onion and garlic in the EVOO and add to the beans

  7. I also added 2 bay leaves after the first 60 minutes of cooking along with cumin and sage

  8. Makes about 8-1/2 cups. I am calling 1 cup a single serving.
