Plain sponge for after sunday lunch.

Recipe Ingredients for basic cake

4 oz flour
4 oz sugar
4 oz margarine
2 medium eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla

Recipe Directions for basic cake

  1. Cream margarine and sugar till pale and creamy.

  2. Gradually add eggs and vanilla.

  3. Sift together baking powder and flour.

  4. Fold carefully into the wet items.

  5. Put into a greased and lined 6 inch round cake tin.

  6. And bake in a medium oven or gas mark 4 for about 35 minutes.

  7. Should be springy to touch and starting to come away from the edge of the tin.

  8. Leave to cool for five minutes before turning out.
