Tastes just like baked beans, but with lentils. I used a combination of de Puy and Beluga lentils and they worked great.

Recipe Ingredients for Barbecue Lentils

1 3/4 cups lentils, rinsed
3 3/4 cups water
3/8 cup molasses
1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
3/4 tablespoon vinegar
3/8 cup ketchup
3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
12 ounces tomato sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons minced onions
3/16 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional

Recipe Directions for Barbecue Lentils

  1. Use a lentil that will hold its shape-brown or de puy should work well.

  2. Add lentils to water, bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes or until tender but whole. Add molasses, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, onions, and liquid smoke to the cooked lentils, stirring to combine.

  3. Cover and bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.
