Recipe Ingredients for Barbara's Homemade French Bread

1 package yeast, dry
1 tbsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
2 cups water, lukewarm
6 cups flour
2 tbsp. cornmeal
1 tbsp. butter, melted

Recipe Directions for Barbara's Homemade French Bread

  1. Dissolve the yeast, in warm water, in a large bowl. Add the salt and sugar. Gradually stir in the flour, adding only enough until the mixture refuses to absorb more. Knead the dough on a flourded board until slightly elastic, 3 to 4 minutes.

  2. Transfer to a greased bowl, brush the top lightly with a little of the melted butter, cover the bowl with a damp cloth. Place in a warm spot to rise until the dough doubles in bulk.

  3. Butter or spray a baking sheet and sprinkle with cornmeal, shaking off any excess. Punch the dough down and turn onto the floured board. Divide the dough in half, shape into long, narrow loaves; place on the prepared baking sheet, make several shallow diagonal slashes acroos the tops. Brush the tops with the remaining butter and allow the rise about 45 minutes or so. Place the loaves in a preheated 450 degree oven for 5 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees for 30 minutes more.
