Old-time Dutch recipe that is a family favorite. The calorie count is per slice.

Recipe Ingredients for Balkenbrie

2 lb pork bacon, crumbled
1 lb hamburger, cooked & drained
1 lb pork liver, cooked & drained
6 cups flour
1 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 3/4 tsp ground cloves
1 3/4 tsp ground allspice

Recipe Directions for Balkenbrie

  1. Cover pork liver with water. Cook until done. Grind in meat grinder.

  2. Cook hamburger, drain and rinse. Grind in meat grinder.

  3. I've added bacon in the recipe, but really you should use pork cracklings (left over from rendered lard) - 4 cups.

  4. Put all ground meat into water left in pan from cooking the liver.

  5. Add flour until the mixture is very solid. May be less or more than 6 cups depending on the amount of water.

  6. Put in two bread pans. Cool. Can be frozen too.

  7. Slice into 1/8-1/4" slices and fry in canola oil until outsides are crisp.

  8. Serve with dark Karo syrup.
