Baked spaghetti with hot italian sausage and mozzarella cheese on top.

Recipe Ingredients for Baked spaghetti

1 pound spaghetti
28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
1 green bell pepper
1 yellow onion
4 cloves garlic
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
10 sprigs fresh parsley
3/5 lbs hot italian sausage
2 tablespoons corn starch
3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Recipe Directions for Baked spaghetti

  1. Boil spaghetti as directed to reach just under al dente. Drain and mix with olive oil. Set aside.

  2. Cut up hot italian sausage links and sear in the bottom of a saucepan. Reduce heat and add chopped onions and green pepper and sauté until soft. Add chopped garlic cloves and dried spices. Drain canned crushed tomatoes, reserving liquid, and add to saucepan. Simmer on low for 30 minutes. Mix cornstarch with reserved liquid from tomatoes and stir slowly into saucepan to thicken sauce. Chop parsley and add to pot. Simmer for another 30 minutes, or until flavors are sufficiently combined.

  3. Add spaghetti to saucepan with sauce and mix well. Pour entire pot with sauce and noodles into a baking/casserole dish. Sprinkle 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese over the top. (At this point, you can cover the dish and refrigerate for up to two days.)

  4. Bake covered in 400 degree oven for 30 minutes (if baking immediately), or for 50 minutes (if baking cold from the refrigerator). Remove cover and bake an additional 10 minutes. If a browned top is desired, broil for 2 minutes at the very end. Remove from oven and let rest for 15 minutes before eating, to allow the noodles to absorb all the sauce.
