Using an egg as a binding agent, this dish tastes a bit like noodle kugel.

Recipe Ingredients for Baked Macaroni & Cheese - Take 1

8 oz macaroni
1 tbsp butter
1 cup milk
1 medium egg, beaten well
1 1/2 cups (6oz) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 tbsp water, boiling
1/4 cup onion, grated and sauteed in
1/2 tsp butter
1 tsp paprika

Recipe Directions for Baked Macaroni & Cheese - Take 1

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter medium casserole dish.

  2. Cook macaroni until almost done. Drain and set aside.

  3. Mix butter and egg in saucepan until well blended. Mix in milk and spice mixture (mustard, salt, nutmeg and water).

  4. Add cheese and stir. Stir in macaroni and onions.

  5. Pour macaroni mixture into buttered casserole dish, top with more cheese (if desired). Sprinkle with paprika.

  6. Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until browned.
