Recipe Ingredients for Baked French Toast

12 slices firm wheat bread
6 large eggs
2 cups fat free milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
4 tbsp. margarine, softened
1 tbsp. Maple syrup
1 (optional) confectioners' sugar and berries to top

Recipe Directions for Baked French Toast

  1. In 8in square baking dish, arrange bread slices in 4 stacks.

  2. In blender, combine eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pinch of salt. Blend until smootg, Slowly pour egg mixture over bread slicecs; press bread down to absorb egg mixture, spooning egg mixture over any uncoated bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

  3. Preheat oven to 350F. in small bowl, combine brown sugar, butter, and maple syrup. Spread evenly over each stack of bread. Bake until knife inserted 1 inch from center comes out clean, about 1 hour. Let stand 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with confectioners' sugar and fresh berries, if desired.
