A lovely brunch recipe. You could lighten it additionally by using non-stick cooking spray instead of butter, and using lower fat milk instead of whole milk, although the custard wouldn't be as rich.

Recipe Ingredients for Baked French Toast

2 teaspoons butter, melted
12 baguette slices (about 1 inch thick each, cut on the diagonal)
3 cups whole milk
3 eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2/3 cup sugar

Recipe Directions for Baked French Toast

  1. Preheat oven to 400F with rack in middle. Spread the melted butter evenly in a 13- by 9-inch shallow baking dish or pan (3-quart; preferably glass or ceramic).

  2. Arrange bread in 1 layer in baking dish.

  3. Whisk in milk, eggs, vanilla, and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth.

  4. Pour custard over bread, then turn slices over several times so they soak up as much custard as possible. Sprinkle top with remaining sugar.

  5. Bake until puffed and set, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool in dish on a rack 10 minutes, then dust with cinnamon.
