Are baked beans healthy?

I try to eat a varied and balanced diet; however, most days I have Heinz baked beans for lunch.  Is this a healthy choice and will it help or hinder weight loss?


Baked beans are a healthy choice for weight loss and any time.  They are packed with plant protein, fiber, vitamin B1, niacin, calcium, and iron, although the iron isn't well absorbed unless you eat beans with a source of vitamin C.  Beans are naturally low in fat, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium and so, for canned baked beans, select brands that remain low in these nutrients. (Read the Nutrition Facts label.) Baked beans are part of the Meat Group; 1/4 of a cup is nutritionally equivalent to 1 ounce of meat. The US government encourages frequent consumption of beans – at least 3 cups per week!
