Creamy asparagus and onions topped with cheese and bread crumbs

Recipe Ingredients for Asparagus Onion Casserole

1 lb asparagus
1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
1 1/2 cups 1% milk
3 tbls flour
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
5 tbls butter
2 slices whole wheat bread, torn
2 onions, sliced
3 oz cream cheese

Recipe Directions for Asparagus Onion Casserole

saute onions and asparagus in 1 tbls of butter until crisp-tender. Put in a 9 x 13 casserole dish. Melt 3 tbls butter over medium heat, add flour and cook and stir until smooth and bubbly. Add milk slowly and bring to boil. Boil for 2 minutes. Add salt, pepper, and cream cheese, reduce heat and stir and simmer until cheese is melted. Pour cream sauce over vegetables, sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Melt 2 tbls butter and toss in soft bread crumbs. Sprinkle over casserole. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until bubbly.
