SO worth making instead of buying those nasty pre-made ones. A great treat for breakfast with coffee - much more healthy than an apple danish! I've even used the same ingredients and made individual apple turnovers. Use Whole Wheat Flour if you are making the pie crust yourself

Recipe Ingredients for Apple Pie

1 pillsbury pie crust or homemade if you have the time
7 medium apples
2 tablespoons flour (whole wheat is ideal)
1/6 cup butter
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
2 teaspoons ground cloves

Recipe Directions for Apple Pie

  1. If making fresh crust, divide into 2 even balls. Roll out one ball until you can place it in the bottom of the pie dish and have about 1 inch hanging over the sides.

  2. Cut apples with a corer/slicer/peeler OR peel by hand, quarter, cut out the core then slice the apple quarters into 1/4 inch slices.

  3. **All the measurements are estimates. I really don't measure when making this pie. If I use Fuji apples, I use almost no sugar because they are so sweet. If I use Granny Smith Apples, I use more than 2 tbsp of sugar because they are so tart. I prefer to use some of both.**

  4. Place one layer of apples in the bottom, fanning them out, then sprinkle some of the dry ingredients and dot with some of the butter. Continue this process until you fill the dish and the apples are mounded at least 2 inches above the height of the dish (they will settle and shrink a lot while cooking).

  5. Place second crust on top. Roll both crusts together, rolling them down so to seal the pie and continue all the way around. This works better than just crimping the edges because it helps keep the juices from bubbling out the sides during baking. Poke some holes in the top crust or even us you knife to make a pattern by dotting it into the dough.

  6. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes. I really don't time it, I just keep checking it and turning it (my oven has hot spots) and I take it out when I can insert a butter knife with no resistance (the apples are soft).

  7. it will be quite soupy when really hot, but it sets up once it has cooled a little.
