Recipe Ingredients for Apple Pie jmw

1 3/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt, optional
1/2 cup shortening
6 tablespoons water, cold
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
6 cups apple, sliced thin

Recipe Directions for Apple Pie jmw

  1. Put apples, 1/4 cup flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in large bowl.

  2. Mix together well and let stand while making crust.

  3. For crust, mix together 1 3/4 cups flour and salt.

  4. Work shortening into flour mixture with a fork, then with your hands to make a crumbly, mealy mixture.

  5. With a fork, stir in water one tablespoon at a time until mixture pulls away from side of bowl and holds together. Do not use too much water or dough will be sticky.

  6. Cut dough in half. Roll out one half and spread in a 9-inch pie plate.

  7. Stir apple mixture one more time. Then spread in pie plate.

  8. Roll out second half of dough to fit over top of pie plate.

  9. With cold water, moisten the edges of the pie dough in the pie plate.

  10. Lay second dough over top of pie.

  11. Seal edges in desired pattern. I use first two fingers and thumb to pinch edges together in a fluted pattern.

  12. Trim away any extra dough that overhangs edge of pie plate.

  13. With a sharp knife, make several slits in top of crust to let steam escape while baking.

  14. Bake at 400 degrees for 40-50 minutes.

  15. If desired, cover edges of crust with foil before putting in oven. Remove foil during last 20-15 minutes of baking to brown edges.

  16. Makes 8 servings.
