A Greek casserole made with eggplant and ground meat and topped with a bechamel sauce.

Recipe Ingredients for 1574 Moussaka

4 tbs olive oil
1 eggplant
1 lb. ground beef
1 onion, diced
15 1/2 oz. crushed tomatoes
5 tbs. butter
6 tbs. flour
3 c. milk, room temp
1 egg
2 egg yolks

Recipe Directions for 1574 Moussaka

  1. Peel and slice eggplant into 1/2" slices and arrange on foil. Brush olive oil on each side and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast in oven for 25 min until soft at 400 degrees. Set aside.

  2. Brown ground meat and onion. Add nutmeg, gr. clove, gr. cinnamon, alspice to taste. Drain grease. Set aside.

  3. Pour a little crushed tomato into bottom of greased casserole. Place eggplant slices to cover bottom. Layer with meat mixture, then feta cheese. Repeat the layers until everything is used up. Top with bechamel sauce.

  5. Melt butter. Add flour and cook for a couple of minutes until thick. Add warm milk and whisk constantly until all the lumps are gone. Bring to a boil and stir for a couple of minutes until smooth. Set aside to cool. When cool add 1 egg and 2 egg yolks.

  6. Top the casserole with the sauce.

  7. Bake at 350 for about 45 min to 1 hour until custard is set. Let cool 10 min before cutting.
