100 Pounds Lighter, A Few More to Go

Congratulations to Davesnay who has lost 100 pounds.  She used to weigh 330 pounds and now she weighs 230.  She explains that tracking everything she eats with Calorie Count is the key to her success. With 30 pounds to go, she doesn’t plan on stopping what she’s doing anytime soon and already has a maintenance plan in mind.

She contacted us through our Share Your Story feature, and provided the following answers to our questionnaire.

1. What prompted you to begin this weight loss journey? Did you have an "Aha!" moment?

I went to the Doctor for my annual physical in May, 2011. After the general exam... he said "lose weight or you're going to get diabetes". He recommended 1500 calories a day and 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. I walked out, talked to my husband and picked a date to start.

2. What other "diets" (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?

I tried going to Curves a few years back, but without dieting, it just didn't work. I never really tried to diet because I didn't feel like I was eating all that much and just chalked it up to inactivity.

3. Please describe how you reached your weight loss goal. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?  Did you implement any other strategies besides Calorie Count?  What was the most important change?

I simply used Calorie Count to calculate my calories for the day and utilized my Xbox with Kinect for working out, along with walking and a stationary bike. I started buying lower calorie foods and really paying attention to what I was eating. Added fruits and veggies and started eating breakfast...which I never did before. Once I started, I found it to be pretty easy to keep it up and never let bad days get to me.

4. Please describe how Calorie Count was instrumental to your weight loss.

Words can't express how happy I was to find Calorie Count. I love getting graded for my daily meals and seeing what areas of nutrition I needed to work on. I log on daily from home and plan my meals a day in advance, so I know exactly what I will be having. I tend to eat the same things, so it was nice to have that information right there under the corresponding meals. I downloaded the app on my phone in case of an emergency, so that even on the go, I can keep track. I could not have done this without Calorie Count.

5. What difficulties did you experience losing weight?

The hardest part was dealing with the hunger pangs. I just decided that I would say "fat cells are dying" when I felt hungry and it made it ok. Also, going out to eat was hard, but I planned ahead. If I am going out for dinner, I will have a salad for lunch.

6. How long did it take you to see results? When did you realize that you were a success?

It didn't take long actually...lost about 10 lbs in the first 3 weeks or so. I was down 50 lbs in just over 2 months and 75 within 5 months...for me, success was almost immediate, which I know is rare.

7. How do you prevent relapse?

For the first 3 months, it was plain old commitment. Just kept it in my head that I DID NOT want to deal with diabetes. Then we went on vacation and I had a "free week". I didn't input my calories but watched what I ate and spent a lot of time in the pool. When I saw that it didn't hurt me too much, I gave myself a "free" weekend once a month.

8. How has your life changed now that you've lost weight?

I have more energy, I enjoy doing things I couldn't walking and exercise. I have sleep apnea and was able to get rid of my O2 tank and lower my pressure by half. Hoping to be off my machine by the time I'm done.

9. How long have you maintained your current weight?

I am still losing but I already have a maintenance plan in mind. I will continue to use Calorie Count, but will up my calories to 2000. If I see that I am gaining, I will reduce them back to 1500. I will always have to count calories, I'm ok with that.

10. What five tips do you have for other dieters?

  • Log EVERYTHING you eat.
  • Stay focused.
  • Exercise is addictive once you start doing it routinely.
  • Surround yourself with people who will support you.
  • Be creative in your food planning.

It is so great to hear of your success.  I am working on losing 100 lbs and have reached 21 so far. I figure persistence rather than perfection will get me there.  I loved when you said you didn't let a bad day get you down.  Congratulations.


You are truly inspiring. I too have lost quite a bit of weight (80 lbs) but in a much longer time frame. Its by reading about you and others that helps me keep the weight off...congratulations...I know you will reach your goal. Good job! Smile

For me, what hit home, was your positive attitude.  You seem to have been determined not to let the small stuff get to you (a problem I have).  Bad days?  Eh, no big deal.  Hunger pains?  Take that fat cells!  Ew, I don't want to count calories forever!  Whatever - small price to pay for feeling great, being healthy, and not having to deal with diabetes!  

I would describe myself as not very self-aware, but I think I am noticing that I am sensitive (I do let the small things affect me too deeply) and too much of a perfectionist (I put so much pressure on myself to get things right, that I usually crumble and end up with something so far from my goal it is almost funny).  Both of these characteristics, and their consequences, can get me feeling down on myself.  And, while it might not seem relevant to getting in shape, I find that it is relevant in most aspects of my life, because our outlook and attitude is imperative in everything!  

So, maybe this is too much about me (whatever, this site is therapy for all of us), but I am really just taking the long route to saying how much I appreciated you sharing your story!  You've really accomplished something and your attitude while doing it is an inspiration to me!  Thanks!

You are such an inspiration!  Today is such a bad day for me because I was up really early with my sick 2 year old (again) and have been really hungry all morning.  I haven't been grocery shopping because of caring for my sick child and it feels like all we have to eat in the house is not good for my diet... I was considering breaking into the leftover spinach and artichoke dip that's in the fridge when I read this... I am now having the rest of the baby carrots and a big cup of tea with splenda.  I am going to call my husband and have him stop at the grocery store on his way home from work and pick up some healthy food.

If you can lose 100 lbs I know that I can reach my goal!

I relate so much to your comment, chefmom.  I have reached an impass as well, and I have so far to go. I count calories, write down my food, eat mostly vegetarian, stopped eating out, cut out all junk and fast food, do my walking. But I feel good, and I trust that if I keep at it, I will see some results again soon.

I went on Calorie Count a number of months ago and had the same experience as you.  The weight continued to crawl up, and I knew I was eating right.  Then the doctor ordered some blood work and checked my TSH levels, (thyroid hormones).  Turns out my thyroid was hardly working at all (hypothyroidism) and he ordered meds.  You have to start out with a small dose because the doctor said if you didn't, it would be like revving the motor of a race car and dropping it into gear.  You would burn out the motor and drop the transmission.  So I am at the smallest dose imaginable, and will be for a few months before the meds can be increased.  I have already LOST 5lbs in 10 days!  I thought there was something wrong and there was!  I have been researching hypothyroidism and discovered about 18% of the population have some form of it and don't even know it.  I would suggest asking for this blood test if you know you have really been eating fewer calories and exercising and still gaining weight.  Don't give up, there's a reason.  Calorie counter really does work, when your body is working the way it should.

I Also Lost Over 100 Pounds in 10 Months....Now I Am so Afraid of Getting To Thin or Gaining The Weight Back...I Am at My Final Goal....I Am Trying to Make a Maintenance Plan./..I Work Out at the Gym 6 Days a Week and i Walk at Least 5 Miles a Day...Most the Time More  than 5 Miles.....Any Suggestions On Maintenance...CongraTS to Everyone who is Losing and Sticking to it.....Its a Tough Battle...THE Benifits are Amazing

When my "fat cells are dying" I wait it out and don't give in to eating, after some time the hunger pangs are gone.  Be patient you will see. Laughing

What a wonderful story!! And what a inspiration you are! My goal is to loose 100 pounds and keep it off! Seems like it will be a lifetime away but I know I can do it!

I love CC it is so addictive! I find myself on here 1-2 total hrs a day reading peoples stories commenting, reading forums and of coarse logging. I find my facebook time is no more than 5 min a day! What a meaningful purpose for a "social networking site" its about time!!

I am 2 months into my lifelong journey and down 17 pounds. It takes a long long time. For me thats the hardest part. I dont get hunger pains but the waiting to see results and the motivation to get to the gym 5-6 days a week is hard.

Congratulations.....I have lost 80 lbs. myself and for some reason have lost my drive and have begun gaining some back.  I have talked and talked to myself to try and get it back and to try to figure out what has happened, but haven't been able to get a hold on it yet.  It's stories like yours that help.  I don't have much of a support system so this really helps.  Keep up the good work and I appreciate your story more than you know.

It's a commitment, but you DID IT!!! rah! rah! rah!  Best of Luck on the maintenance! 

After recently reaching my 100 lb loss in May, I am nearing maintenance (in about 25 lbs) and having some anxiety about maintaining. Losing control is one of my biggest concerns.  I have realized that my new way of eating is forever--not just until the goal is reached.  


Wow! You remind me of me! I have to use caloriecount! I have too plan my meals ahead of time too! You have achieved victory by challenging yourself!
