High fiber supplements – and high fiber foods like whole grains, legumes, and produce with the skins and seeds intact – do slow down digestion to help people feel full longer. To eat less at meals, some people take 1 to 2 teaspoons of Metamucil with a glass of water about 15 minutes before the start of the meal. Others eat Metamucil wafers in-between meals to stay full. But for high fiber supplements like the psyllium (Metamucil) to work, each dose must be accompanied by 8 ounces of water. Water makes the fiber expand and pushes it through the system. Water soluble fiber works better than water insoluble fiber to promote fullness.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
