I had chipotle veggie bowl this afternoon for lunch. I asked for less rice and no cheese or sourcream but ate guacamole. CC shows the calories by 'meal component' and when I added up the calories they came up to be close to 600 without cheese and sour cream. Is it really that bad? I feel really guilty for eating that many calories for lunch and I almost ran out of calories for dinner since my breakfast and snacks added up to 500 (tried a new receipe for breakfast and didn't know that it would come up to that many calories). Does anyone know if the veggie bowl really has 600+ calories? I love that place and it fills me so good but never realized it is high in calories. I feel sad that I may not be able to eat there often. Any comments?
That is about the same total I get for the veggie bowl with guacamole and no cheese. I think the guacamole adds most of the calories but it is so delicious! I will have it about once every two weeks as a treat. I guess you could eat less of the guacamole but personally I like to factor that in and eat less for my other meals that day. Other people may disagree but I think the basic ingredients of the bowl without the flour tortilla are pretty healthy.
I suspect that a lot of the calories were in the guacamole. Avocados are very nutritious and a great source of healthy fat, but they are certainly loaded with fat. They're the sort of food that I'd say to eat in moderation unless you're trying to gain weight.
Chipotle is really high in calories (and sodium :\ ). Ordering less rice was a good choice (it has oil/butter on it). As for the rest of the calories, if you had beans, they are high calories but good for you (mmmm, protein) and guacamole is very high in (good, healthy) fats, which means lots of calories even though guac is good for you.
Here's what I get when I go to chipotle:
lettuce, black beans, fajita veggies, lots of salsa, and half the guacamole.
It's still high cal, but not as bad as with rice, and still yummy and filling because of the salsa and lettuce. :)
Pretty much. Chipotle is bad for you. Now, if you have it once in a while or half the size then its not so bad. Not only is the fat, cals bad, but sodium too. But its not the tortilla thats bad for you. Its how they cook it, and all that salt and grease.
Why dont you try and made your own veggie bowl at home and bring it to work? That means you can control the cals and what they put in it. Lo fat cheese, guac and other things?

you guys are awesome. All good suggestions. Either eat less for other meals or no rice and just beans and vegs and salsa or eat less guacamole. Thank you so much for quick responses and good suggestions. Next time I will order it without any rice and half guacamole and it should be still good with those yummy black beans. Hmmm....Sodium part, I forgot about that. I guess I can't eat there often.......may be once in two weeks or 3 weeks.
in men's health "eat this not that" they recommend the crunchy tacos with no sour cream or cheese. it's still like 500 calories for all 3, but maybe you could just have 2 and save the third for a snack later in the day. my boyfriend was overjoyed when he saw that article and since he's a guy, 500 calories isn't as much as it is for us ladies.
Back in the day, my mom lost TONS of weight eating Chipotle on Weight Watchers. We had it 3-5 times a week.
It's a matter of saving your calories for it, man.
I go to Chipotle's every once in a while for lunch. I get a burrito, but I have them leave off the rice and beans, add chicken, double fajita veggies, only half the cheese, and salsa. Then I have them cut it in half and take the extra portion home for dinner. Half of one of those burritos is plenty to eat for a single meal and it's a reasonable number of calories.
Actually the rice from chipotle does not contain butter, it is vegan:)
I am mystified by this thread... Are you guys talking about actual chipotle peppers, or is there a restaurant chain called "Chipotle's" ??
Unfortunately, Chipotle is pretty high in calories and in sodium! If you really enjoy it though, just find a way to fit it into your daily allotments!
I used to go to Chipotle all the time and get the same thing. A huge chicken burrito with tons of rice, cheese, sour cream and guacamole. As you can imagine, it was a TON of calories.
So when I started trying to eat healthy, I thought that meant I had to give up Chipotle completely. Inevitably, I'd start craving it, give into my cravings, and blow my calories for the day by 1000+calories. Not a good plan.
So I started trying to work Chipotle into my plan. I went to chipotlefan.com and messed around with the numbers until I found something that sounded delicious and low(er) calorie than my 1000 calorie burritos. After trying different things, I discovered that I loved getting vegetarian crispy tacos. Black beans, gaucamole (which is my favorite part), salsa, and cheese if I want to splurge. Oh, and I usually put a little bit of that chipotle tabasco sauce. Its delicious and about half the calories of the original burrito (or less) that I used to eat.
And now that I'm planning for Chipotle in advance, I'm less likely to blow a day's worth of calories on chips and salsa and all that.
I suggest getting the tacos or the salad, as some people have suggested.
I love chipotle too!!!! I think the key to long term healthy living is to not give up eating all the restaurants and foods you love, but to make educated healthy choices about it.

^^^^This. I find that I can eat at nearly any restaurant if I do my homework, plan ahead, and make smart choices.

The best thing about Chipotle is that all of the meat is organic, much of it is free range or cage free. Much of their produce is organic as well. Also, Chipotle really does their research before opening a restaurant since they do their best to include as many ingredients from local farmers as possible. Pretty great for a chain. Go Chipotle!
