Hey everyone- Does any one know if there's a way to tell how many calories are in the food im cooking? For example, I made homemade chicken noodle soup, but I have no idea how many calories are in one serving? Any definite way to know or should I keep estimating how many calories it could have?
Add up all the calories that you put in the soup and divide by the number of servings
I second smwhipple's suggestion. I also weigh everything, so my servings aren't, like, "one-sixteenth of this soup" and rather "250 grams of this soup" or whatever. It makes portion control a lot easier.
Also (Warning: Nerd Alert!), I will put recipes into an Excel spreadsheet with the weights and the calories of the ingredients all worked out, so the next time I make the recipe, I can just stick a bowl on the scale and add a certain weight of one ingredient after another. It makes cooking (NOT my favorite pastime!) a lot faster.
You can use the recipe analyzer tool. Enter all of your ingredients and the # of servings and it will calculate the nutritional content for you.
It's easier if you cook for yourself!
The hard part if guesstimating when someone else cooks for you. Like when a friend invites me to eat at her house, I don't exactly want to be a jerk and ask "so.... exactly how much oil did you put in this?"
"Luckily", I don't have friends at whose place I can eat, but my mom is really frustrating. She puts a dash of this and such measurements into everything, plus her scale is ancient and doesn't measure small amounts. But she does love that scale. So I'm just estimating everything that I eat with her, or just not bother counting and probably eat less.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
