I am a vegan and I have hypothyroidism. I'm just wondering if there are many of you out there. I've been told by my doctor and others that I'm not supposed to have soy any more because it acts as a depressant for the thyroid. I've switched over to almond and rice milks, but there are so many things I can't have anymore! What do you guys do? Any soy-free substitutes?
Being a vegan with hypothyroidism myself, I have done tons of research on these subjects - especially as they relate to each other. I believe this article: http://www.vegfamily.com/dietician/1006a.htm adequately sums up the issue of concerns about the effect of soy on thyroid function.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
