does anyone know of any meals with beans or lentils that aren't spicy? i usually just eat them with rice, or once in a while bean tacos. sometimes i crave something really hearty and fulfilling but i don't want to always eat rice with them, and i can't make any chilis or meals that are thai or indian -inspired because i'm really sensitive to sauces (can't eat anything spicy or teriyaki and barbeque sauces, salad dressings, etc.)
i have tried looking up recipes but all i'm finding are chilis and bean salads (not too fond of the idea of cold beans though), so i can look up the recipes but i was just hoping someone had a suggestion!
What about minestrone, or pasta e fagioli? Beans are one of my favorite soup ingredients. I don't really stick to any particular recipe, and soup is a great way to use up whatever leftovers you've got lying around.
Here's one example:
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 can cannellini beans
1 can kidney beans
1 carrot, diced
1 onion, diced
1 rib celery, diced
olive oil, a T or two
veg (chicken or beef if you want) stock, amount depends on how hearty you like your soup
a handful (maybe 1/2 c) pasta
herbs (bay leaf, basil, etc.)
Heat the oil in a big pot and add the onion, celery, and carrot. Let soften.
Add the tomatoes, stock, herbs, and beans. Simmer for a while until heated through and the flavors start to really come through – maybe 10 minutes.
Remove from heat, stir in cooked pasta, salt and pepper to taste.
You really can throw in whatever fresh, canned, or frozen veg you have lying around, or use different beans if you want…soup is very easy to customize!
I make a tomatoes, and canallini bean salad that I generally serve over cooscoous
I can diced tomatoes drained, 1 can canallini beads drained and rinsed, 1 sprig of rosemarry chopped fine, 1 small onion diced, 1 clove garlic pressed, 1 tablespoon balsalmic vinegar 1 teaspoon olive oil
Yummy healthy and cheap
Lentil soup is yummy:
(Just noticed this is the Vegetarian forum. Use veggie stock instead of chicken stock and it'll work just as nicely. Also, I rarely actually use the Tabasco and, even if you did, there's so little that the soup still isn't spicy.)
wow everyone thanks for replying, all of these sound soo good i'm hungry now..
secondmouse soup is such a good idea! i love soup especially now that it's freezing out. and so easy to make and like you said very customizable
baltimoreamt that sounds SO good. i didn't know what cooscous is but looked it up and it looks good; would it be around rice in the grocery store (sorry stupid question!)??
and susiecue that sounds really good too! i've been wanting to try making lentil soup for a while. never had red lentils so i think i may use this recipe, it sounds delicious and not that spicy which is good
Black bean burgers!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, they are like my fav food. You can get them frozen but I suggest making your own and freezing them.
Black bean burgers are a great idea. Mmm.
Skinnytaste.com is a great website. She has lots of recipes posted, and there are quite a few with beans or lentils, and not all are spicy chilis.
Red lentil mint soup is amazing, and the cayenne is optional. I love it spicy, but my mother doesn't add cayenne in hers.
oh goodness! black bean burgers-i forgot all about these! thank you!! my brother eats them frozen from morningstar, i don't like those but my mom used to make her own and they are SO good haha. maybe i can get her to teach me
and xfruitbat, instead of doing homework i just spent a half hour looking at that site. everything looks so delicious, i'm kind of hungry now lol. but i am definitely going to pick some of her recipes and try to make them so thank you !
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
