Looking for some good suggestions for high protein vegan snacks! Hubby is planning on competing in a jiu-jitsu tournament and has to cut weight....not a whole lot (about 5 more pounds), but he's finding it difficult to get his weight lower. Right now he's eating raw (green smoothie for breakfast, and it's a huge one, fruit and larabars for snacks, big salad for dinner, which includes homemade dressing full of flax oil, etc., and a whole avocado), and he's lost some weight but is not where he needs to be by October. I think he needs to include more protein to help with satiety, but we're having problems thinking of high protein vegan snacks (besides nuts/seeds). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
You may need to supplement with a vegan protein powder since his time frame and daily calorie amounts may be limited. Use it to make smoothies or protein bars. Also replace the Larabars with higher protein packaged bars, like Vega brand.
You could also add additional servings of tempeh & tofu.
I recently discovered smoked tofu. It's already cooked and makes a great treat. You could make your own protein bars out of oatmeal, peanut butter, and vegan protein powder or pea protein. I also love making smoothies using silken tofu which is low in fat and another high protein source.
There are vegan body building web sites that will have very detailed information because body builders usually try to loose weight while maintaining muscle before competitions.
thanks for the tips! I was telling him he needs more protein, but like a man (sorry, all you guys!), he didn't want to be told what to do. Then he realized he wasn't losing as fast as he was hoping....so hopefully my suggestions about the additional protein will help his weight loss goal. :) Right now he's following the diet of that Empire State stair runner (I forget his name, but he was featured in VegNews), but I think that diet is more suited for an endurance athlete, not someone trying to cut weight for a tournament! Plus jiu-jitsu is so much more explosive, and you need so much more fast twitch muscle strength (as opposed to long running).
I compete in kickboxing at a semi-pro level and usually have to lose 3kg+ in the final week before weigh-in (have lost 5kg in 1 week before). Here is a link with some useful info on how to cut weight.
Some great packaged high protein snacks are from the company Lenny and Larry, they make high protein Cookies, Brownies, and Muffins. The fat content varies among them all. The lowest fats are actually the lemon and poppy seed and oatmeal cookies. The brownies are easily available I have always found them at Kroger, they have these products at some Whole Foods but not them all. I usually just order from the website. Hope this helps.

When I want more protein in my diet I use a high quality Spirulina supplement.
For future reference, I highly recommend reading "Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life" by Brendan Brazier (former Ironman triathlete and a vegan for many years). He includes a ton of recipes in there, many of them (but not all) raw. He includes a number of energy bar types of recipes as well as salads, smoothies, soups, pancakes etc. Granted he is more of an endurance athlete but I think some of those would work. I bought his book on Amazon.com for less than $5. Also, even though soup is not really considered a snack per say, it can be made ahead and a cup taken to work or wherever as needed in a thermos. Soup can be low calorie and very filling at the same time if you add beans, vegetables, and high protein grains like buckwheat groats or quinoa. Vegetarian split pea soup is another one.
