I used to be anorexic in high school which then transformed into binge eating disorder with periods of starvation (800-100cals/day) then periods of bingeing. When I was in deep anorexia, from what I remember, I ate about 500 calories a day (or less) - I was 14 and this lasted about 4-5 months. I realize that I was anorexic. But what do you call an adult female eating lets say 1000 calories a day? I looked up on a medical site the definition of anorexia and there are a bunch of physical implications listed there - various difficiencies, lunogo hair, loss of period etc. This I don't think happens to those who eat like 1000, so they are not anorexic?? I'm just asking because that is the cycle I'm trying to break and I am trying to see what kind of damage a 1000 calorie diet did to me. I was also told that since I didn't have anorexia for very long, I might not have done "that much" damage to myself back in the day. I'm having a hard time sticking to a higher calorie diet so I am just looking for someone to tell me that 1000 cals/day is stupid!!! I feel stupid asking this, but its hard to change your thinking.
1000 calories a day will only hold on tofat...and you'll be bloated all the time. [trust me I just got out of eating like that] It took a good month for my body to start looking better but it's worth it. You should eat no less than 1200
Well, if you don't fit the definition of anorexia, you'd probably be considered EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified)... either way, 1000 cal a day will eventually cause damage and I definitely advise eating more. However, I've heard that some petite people with small frames can actually be healthfully sustained on 1000 calories a day. 1200 really isn't a magical number... but for the vast majority, 1000 isn't enough. If you are posting this question, it means deep down you know better and have to get yourself eating more. Good luck, I know how hard it is to change your way of thinking.
1000 cals a day IS stupid. I have anorexia and am severely underweight and malnourished, constantly having to go in for blood tests, check-ups, etc. I lost 45 pounds, from healthy to on the verge of death, from eating 1000 calories a day. I would only "starve" (fast) occasionally. Anorexia is not about how many calories you eat. Anorexia is about the way you feel and what you do with those feelings.
aimengzi is right! Anorexia has very little to do with food, really. It's got a whole lot more to do with why you eat so little and how you feel. It's about control and false feelings of empowerment. Don't be a victim of this disorder! Take REAL control of your life and do things right and healthy!!!
Yes, those things can happen on a 1000-calorie a day diet. They just take longer to manifest.
For what it's worth, 1000 is very unlikely to be fatal on its own, even long-term; the WHO defines 900 calories as the bare minimum for survival. But this isn't the bare minimum for health. Someone on 900-1000 will lose a lot of weight, both fat and lean tissue, and do significant damage to organs from wasting, eventually. They will become quite sick. But a body can adapt to it and stay alive, minimally, assuming there's no overexercise or drug use or anything else going on. Basically, people in 3rd world countries in a famine who do pull through. Health may or may not restore fully later.
Most of the signs of anorexia are only supporting a diagnosis, not required for a diagnosis, and are more for judging the physical side of the severity, not whether or not a person actually has the disorder.
A likely diagnosis is ED-NOS, catchall category for people with eating disorders who don't fit all the specific necessary criteria for anorexia or bulimia. Because the criteria for AN and BN are so strict, and exclude a LOT of people who do have significant and damaging EDs because the criteria are so picky, ED-NOS is for those. It's not less serious; it's just less specific.

1000 cals a day is, indeed, stupid. They teach us in medical school that you need more than that - otherwise it's considered underfeeding. Symptoms vary but can indeed include what you mention - but even if you aren't losing hair or having your periods stop, the heart and the bones are still being harmed in ways that are not as visible but still definitely bad.

I have been struggling with anorexia and bulimia for 7 years and I have had all of the symptoms you've mentioned and then some, but I think that the website you visited should be deemed inaccurate.
The diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is usually based on the person being at least 15% - 20% under their normal body weight, not about how many calories they are taking in. Drastically reduced caloric intake is a symptom, not the cause for diagnosis.
I understand that what I am about to say is going to make me the biggest hypocrite you've ever met as I am living off of less than 100 calories per day because of a recent relapse (and I am working really hard on taking it up a notch, trust me)...but 1,000 calories a day is not enough. People tell me I need at least 1,200 calories per day just to keep my organs functioning and I know it's the truth because I am having a lot of problems right now because I only take in 100 calories a day right now.
And, I feel the need to mention, over a period of time on a diet of 1,000 calories a day, you will start getting anorexia symptoms. It will just take longer for them to start showing because you are not starving as much from day to day. But it will still eventually send you into starvation mode.
You shouldn't feel stupid and you're right, it is hard to change the way you think and the way you see and feel about yourself.

Hi, I am in recovery now for anorexia. Yes, you CAN have these bad side effects from just ~1000 calories a day. I haven't had a period for 5 months, my hair falls out, I'm always tired and cold, and my heart rate is in the fifties...
Kuffsz - yeah that is interesting about fasting. I think that low calorie diets are distructive, but not like people say here. 1 day of eating under 1200 is not going to put you in this so called "starvation mode." Plus the slowing of the metabolism during "starvation mode" has more to do with that fact that eating such low calories makes you move less during the day overall, than your metabolism slowing down. Your lean body mass burns the same amount of calories per day to perform the essential functions no matter how much you eat or exercise. I just think it takes more like months to really do damage, rather than a few weeks. And I want to see someone without a real eating disorder willingly eat 1000 calories a day - or even be able to do that.
hcoxkatie - losing your period makes sense. Long distance runners practically don't have it, until they stop training, or they supplement with hormones. Hair falling it is due to lack of vitamins/minerals which can be supplemented, being tired and cold is just an effect of dieting - I don't think anyone that is cutting calories isn't more tired or cold more often than if they were eating the right amount. And heart rate isn't really anything to go by, my mom is healthy as hell and her heart rate is in the 50s. When I was training for the marathon, and this actually applies to long distance runners as well, I had my heart rate in the 50s.
I am not trying to diminish your ED, I was anorexic in HS. Its a terrible place - but that is so much of a mental disease, that is not what I am talking about here. Plus anorexics avoid food, they eat as less as possible, and are scared of eating. Thats again not what I'm talking about. I understand that anorexia is deadly, but 1000 cals a day isn't anorexia. When I was in the deep of it, I was eating like 500 cals max!! I tried to keep it at 400 - I ate nothing during the day and ate the minimum at night b/c my mom made me eat - otherwise I wouldn't have eaten anything on some days.
in regards to the first comment; i once went on a "diet" and ended up eating about 1000 calories a day for almost the whole year. now two years later im eating double as much but im still always bloated. why is this happening and how can i make it stop?
