So yes, I suffered from anorexia some while back....and went through a slow but steady recovery process that has really been of huge help. Ive had numerous amounts of blood tests done...they all come back with good news...meaning im doing great, im healthy. Did some hormone tests as well....I had all of them checked...even my thyroid. EVERYTHING lol absolutely everything regarding hormone levels and what not is completely normal.
So i should be happy right? I mean, Im healthy so yea graet...but still no period!
I need my period so badly.....
so i went to the doctor...she said the same..that im doing really good...so she decided to put me on this pill called Provera. Anyone has been on this pill before? or maybe has gone through this same situation as me? Im always concerned about what pills i get in my body, thats why hehe
again anyone has been through this? any ideas of what can be stopping my period from going back to normal?

I was worried that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome because I've heard that can cause you to lose your period but if your doctor has been monitoring you then she probably would have checked that. I've also heard of people recovering from anorexia waiting a year or longer before getting their period. Anyway, I hope we both get our periods soon!
i also went through anorexia quite a long time ago, from 1998-1999 (my freshman year of HS). i had my cycle since i was in 5th/6th grade, so i had been getting it for a while. well after my anorexia and losing 25 lbs in a very short time, i lost my period. i thought it was the greatest thing ever - i could wear what i wanted, not worry about sports, go swimming, ect. (all fears of a younger female) but then my mom noticed i wasn't buying any tampons or products - so she took me to a GYN (this was my sophomore year of HS).
my GYN told me that since i had shocked my body so much, it was still recovering. to help me get back to normal, she put me on birth control, forcing my body to go through the monthly cycle. i believe i was on ortho-tricyclene back then. i was on this for almost 4 years, until the end of freshman year of college - then i started to get very sick from it - really bad migraines that had me unable to function. so i talked to my GYN and she agreed that it would be good for me to come off of the birth control. i had also gained 40 lbs freshman year of college - going from 125 up to 165 - so i wanted to lose the weight and she said being off the pill would make it easier for me. so off i came, joining weight watchers and naturally and easily losing 30 lbs that summer - ONE PROBLEM - my period never came back.
i told my GYN the situation, and she said that i will probably never have a normal cycle. so back i went onto birth control, this time a different one, aviane. i have been on this type since 2003 and have been able to lose weight on it, and don't get the migraines.
another thing my doctor told me, there is a strong chance i will need to undergo gene therapy if i ever want to have children (scary thought). who is to blame? me. so, because i was anorexic, things will never be normal.
if you are concerned about the medicine, ask your doctor to tell you more about it. my doctor was very open with me and explained everything every step of the way.
at least we can say we are on the route to recovery and living long, healthy and fit lives!
Hope you don't mind me asking -- but when you were suffering from anorexia and lost your period -- does it show up on the blood tests? (ie. hormone levels)

Basically, I want to know if theres a "sure" way to know that the period is missing because of dieting/lack of food.
You are smart nimble86 - it is not worth it.
There is no healthy and realistic quick fix to weight loss and I unfortunately had to experience EDs to learn it the hard way.
I wish more females would realize that they are slowly killing themselves instead of doing their bodies any favors. The thought of not being able to have my own children is indeed a scary thought. I am 23 yrs old, and although children are not in my near future, I would one day love to have my own.
To think that my years of stupidity in HS could ruin this...
The solution to getting rid of those pesky pounds: eating healthy and being active. If you work towards these goals every day of your life, you will do so much good for your body: decrease your risk of heart disease, decrease your risk of obesity, increase the circulation of oxygen and blood throughout your body which stimulates your brain and memory ... I could go on and on.
No one has ever said eating healthy and exercising (in moderation) has ever done more harm than good! So be smart, be wise beyond your years and take the advice of others who have made mistakes so you don't put yourself at risk for life-long complications that surely aren't worth dropping those last few pesky pounds.
The gratification of taking responsibility for myself and what I eat and how active I am is worth every bit of happiness I have now. I owe it to myself and my dedication to fit in at least 20 minutes on the treadmill 3-5x a week even if I don't get home until 10pm sometimes. Then when I get on the scale a week later, I see the results and even if they are slow and steady, I always REMEMBER - slow and steady wins the race.
we have told you many times, you need to have a certain amount of body fat for mensturation to occur... yes this may mean gaining a few more pounds, or eating more fats to make up for the lack.
your body needs some "cushion" so that if it just so happens to become pregnant, the baby and internal organs have extra padding to help support a safe and healthy pregnancy...
you have two options now (since you are already on birthcontol and it hasnt helped) ... 1) you can either gain some more weight (which is probably necessary) or 2) you can try to eat more fats while still staying in your daily intake, just add healthy fats in place of protein or carbs... instead of low fat turkey, eat tofu... instead of jam, use peanut butter... instead of chicken, have salmon... instead of dressing put olive oil and vinager on salad... etc.
Im well aware that I still need to gain weight. I have actually gained more pounds since last week when I posted this. (only a pound but hey lol its a pound).
I just finished taking my last provera pill yesterday, so Im hoping that in the next few days I see a period. This will indicate that I produce enough estrogen.
Its been really hard, but Im slowly getting used to the idea of it.
sucks that I put myself in this situation, but...I had to learn the hard way right?

Bananee, I know exactly what you are going through, because I am too. I haven't had my period since September of 2007.
Although I never went through full out anorexia, for a long time I guess I wasn't eating enough calories/starchy carbohydrates/possibly fats (although I never skimped on fish or olive oil or beans really, definitely always had protein). Prior to that, in senior year of high school, I started eating better and losing weight without really working out at all, and was still getting my period (although it was getting to be about a 39-40 day cycle). But I never actually LOST it. Then, in January 2006, I decided to go on birth control, as I was in a stable relationship. I thought, "wow looking good AND sex without worry? YES!" So I went on it, but had a really bad reaction to it (This wasn't provera, it was a monthly birth control pill, ortho-tri-cyclin). I gained a bunch of weight/water weight, and freaked out, so I restricted my diet like crazy. After the month I was on it, I went off and didn't get my period for 2 months (although I was still bloated..so I think provera would have worked and I would have been fine). Instead, I went onto another birth control pill (Yasmine) for 3 months, but still couldn't deal with the side effects, so I went off of that too. I got one period on my own after that, was still not breaking 800-1000 calories a day, and started working out, and wham, it was gone. I took provera 3 times, all without any withdrawal bleed. For me, I think the mix between going on the pill, which messed with my ovulation, and then freaking out and restricting my diet really did it for me.
I came home for summer from college, and started eating more protein and whatnot, and I would think fats too, but maybe it hasn't been enough? I recently went to a nutritionist, who thought my carbohydrate intake was too low. Mainly, I had been eating a lean meat/vegetable/fruit/some fats diet, plus a free day every week where I just eat whatever I want. I thought that was enough, but I guess its not.
So now I've gone even farther and been making sure to have, on top of what I was normally having, oatmeal, nuts, yogurt, and a whole grain sandwich everyday, and lowered my working out. I tried provera over winter break and actually got a bleed (although that was after being on vacation for a week and not watching anything I was eating). Then, about a month later (so a couple of weeks ago) I got bloating, shooting breast pains, and one day of cramps, but no period.
So basically, I tihnk I'm in the same boat as you, although I got my hormones checked during the exact week that my pms symptoms began and my estrogen was still low (I think in the 20's). I don't even know how it's possible to get the symptoms withotu any real hormones.
Anyway, I just got umbilical hernia surgery, so I'm taking it easy now, had a double free day. Got to say it feels weird not being able to care about my weight, because I really do like managing it. But at this point I guess I have to focus on getting it back if its possible to, and then go from there.
Sorry if this is too long, but yea got to say, I wish I never had to deal with this, because it has given me a lot of heartache. On top of that I developed some Gastrointestinal/urination problems, that I think aren't related at all, so that's what kind of made me think like..alright I need everything under control now.
But everyday I wish I could go back to when I was first losing weight and was still getting my period. At least I didn't feel guilty about liking myself then lol.
But don't be scared about taking provera. If you have estrogen, you'll definitely get some bloating, and weight gain, but once you stop taking it, it really does go away. So I hope you get it! Just make sure not to restrict while you're on it. (Well I guess you're done with it, so I hope you got it)

You confuse me, you said you did not want to gain weight, but then later in another post you say that you DO know you need to gain weight….
According to what the experts say, gain that little bit of extra weight that you need and also increase your fat intake a little, increasing fat intake helps a lot of women get their periods back.
Hey, so I take Provera to start my period, I am overweight and have been for several years, but I know this, that your body fat as a woman plays the most important part in your fertility and cycles, whether it be too high or too low can cuase a lack of a period. I get severe back pain,(Crippling) when I don't have a period, I can go anywhere from a few months to a year without one and it's been this way since I began menstruation. I have poly cystic ovarian syndrome. I have been eating healthier and working out and losing weight since Spetember of 2008, I took Provera in September and October, I have gotten my period every month since on my own. My doctor prescribed it for 10 days a month every month, but I took my chances to see if my body would work right, Sometimes if I gain as little as 2-3 pounds or lose it, it can affect my cycles. Have you guys ever tried getting your body fat tested? Like impedence testing? A woman's body fat range should be between 18-25, depending on many factors like your height. It's a much more acurate form of testing than BMI, Because everybodies body has a different make up, It's like buying a bra at Victoria's secret where you can get measured versus buying a bra at walmart in a box, It's not going to fit everybody! Also If you hate taking pills, you can get progestin creme or accupuncture, There's a spot to the left and below your belly button that if you apply slight pressure, can activate your cycle, sometimes when I'm late I use this and it usually shows up about 4 days later.
