Help! No Idea how to calculate 3 oz of meat

Quote  |  Reply
I'm having problems with figuring out the amount of calories in the meat I eat. So i know  how many calories are in a serving of 3oz. But how much is 3oz of meat? I can't calculate how much an ounce is? Help!

6 oz. is typically about the same size as a deck of playing cards.  So, cut that in half.

Personally, I have a kitchen scale. It answers such questions for me :) I suggest you get one :)
The best way to measure your serving size is a food scale.  3 ounces is about 85 grams.  Food scales are inexpensive.  Choose one that weighs in both grams and ounces.

I am also having the same problem. Where can you get food scales?
I don't know if you have Tuesday mornings in your area, but here they are having a sale on digital scales. They are wonderful. BTW, 3 oz of meat is the size of a deck of cards, not 6.
Here is a web site for size approximations. _3_2x_Portion_Control.asp
You can get them from!  There is a Salter digital scale that's very nice for about $30. I like the ones with a flat weighing surface rather than a bucket or bowl shaped one.

There really isn't a good way to measure meat except by weight and by estimating the size of the portion according to the "deck of cards" rule.  Also, it's about the size of the palm of your hand, if that helps any.
I have this Salter Scale and I love it.
Walmarts and Kmarts should sell scales as well. I have a small plastic one, not digital and it's just as functional as bigger, more expensive ones. I think mine cost around 8 bucks.
I got a scale at walmart i bought the cheap one about 8 bucks but they have about three different models. the help alot.
I got a great one at Target (don't know if in your area or not) and it was about $30 but weight in grams and ounces and boy that really helps - ever notice how food labels will give you the serving size in grams but not ounces.  I use my DAILY and several times a day!  Wouldn't do without one.  You can get cheaper ones too but not for sure if they measure in grams or not.  GOOD LUCK!!!  Worth the investment guaranteed!
One pound of meat, like ground turkey equals 16 ounces.

Divide the package into 4 portions and each will be about 4 ounces. Once cooked and fat is drained off it will be even closerto 3 or 3.5 ounces. Jus eyeball what it looks like for future reference. Same for a steak: IF it is a one pound porterhouse steak about 3-4 ounces will be bone and 12 or so meat. After cooking it is a bit less due to fat dripping out.

And actually I heard that the deck of cards size referenced above is 3 ounces-NOT 6... _1.htm
What about if i am in college and i can't just pull a scale out of my back pocket and ask the person who does the sandwiches to weigh my meat? Is there something else i could go by?
If you're making a sandwich at the sandwich bar, usually one slice of lunchmeat is one ounce and will nearly cover the standard slice of bread.

At a sub shop, they should be able to tell you how much the meat weighs.  (Subway has their meats and cheeses pre-portioned usually.)  Just ask.
Do the scale thing. measure whenever you can. Get used to the size. I found out I must have a small hand, I was only eating 2 oz servings thinking it was 3 oz. Lucky me!!

Just practice. I'm at a college too. Sometimes I take some meat back to my room and make somehting theere. When I do that I measure everything, not to be obesseive, but to learn how much weighed food looks like.
when i'm out in a restaurant, i figure 3 1/2 oz of meat is the size of a deck of cards

Actually, 3 ounces is the size of a deck of playing cards.

As far as sandwiches go, the one slice per oz rule is not too bad, but think of a whole bread sized slice. So that would be like 3-4 salami slices. The deck of cards rule is also a good one, and to reiterate, 1 deck of cards = 3 oz.

NO! 3 oz is the size of a deck of cards! You're going to make this woman starve!

I wouldn't worry, since she hasn't logged in for over 4 years.
