Here's the deal... I'm a college student and still have plenty of drinking to do. Usually, I allocate my calories and budget them to save room for the excessive alcohol consumption that will occur later. So far, it's all been good and I've continued to lose weight while retaining the ability to get hammered alongside my peers.
HOWEVER, I've been researching which type(s) of alcohol are the lowest calorie or have the most favorable ration of alcohol. I prefer to drink libations that have a high alcohol/low caloric content so I've always favored vodka. However, I also love red wine but I'm not sure how proportionate the alcohol/calorie ratio is. I've also heard that Bicardi and a zero-calorie mixer is the best way to go.
Any insights or information to offer? What alcohol do you prefer to drink while dieting? Which type alcohol is the healthiest for dieting or contains more alcohol and less calories?
By the way, I realize that alcohol itself consists of empty calories that get converted to acetate and not drinking at all would be more beneficial to weight loss, but as I stated earlier, I've still got a lot of drinking to do. Thanks!

But basically you've figured out the key to low calorie drinking. Alcohol like vodka, rum, tequila and most other liquors are about 70calories per ounce. Mix those with some diet mixer (depending on your poison of choice: I like vodka and coke zero, Rum and diet A.W. Rootbeer, tequila and crystal light or Sprite Zero, and whiskey with diet rootbeer or diet lemonade.)
Red wine is your second best bet, especially since one tends to drink it a little slower than a mixed drink.
If it's to get drunk, just down a few shots of vodka and tequila (mixing makes you drunker, also gives a worse hangover though).
If it's to just appear to be having alot to drink while with others, then just put a tiny bit of vodka in a glass and fill the rest with diet soda/lemonade/coke, so you're having less than a shots-worth but look like you have alot...
Yep, spirits with diet mixers is the way to go. What's more important though is that you eat as little as possible after you've started drinking. I read that once alcohol is in your system, the body will burn that for fuel first, so any food you eat is going to be stored as fat. Also because alcohol basically lowers inhibition and self control so it's easy to end up eating a lot of crap. If you get hungry, chug a lot of water. I'd have a very high protein meal before you start drinking to keep you full.
1 gram of alcohol= 7 calories. No way around it.
As others have said, if you are dead set on catching a buzz select something that adds the minimum of carbs along with this. Avoid sweet mixed drinks, beers, etc. But there is no way to get around the calories of the actual alcohol.
I suppose it is pointless to point out that more than one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men is associated with a huge range of increased health risks and increased chances of premature death. If you are trying to loose weight the smart call is zero alcohol until you are at target weight. Once you get to target drink very lightly if you choose to drink at all.

Careful there, thats a slight blanket-generalization and overstatement (great link though). It doesn't matter if you eat while drinking alcohol, so long as you include it in your calories for the day. If you keep calories the same, fat-loss will be the same.
I do agree that you lose self-control and the cues of "I'm full," so more water, and a high protein meal before drinking helps to control satiety and cravings.

Well, I think if you wanna catch a buzz at a lower calorie range, you gotta mix your drinks up. It is GOING to give you a horrible hangover, but it'd definitely make you go buzzing with few drinks. I had a triple shot margarita, with about 3-4 vodka soda + lime, and then a low-calorie beer - I'll be good. That translates to 350 cals + 250 + 110 = 710 calories. Not too bad for a night out. I can easily put away 1000-2000 calories worth of drinks when I go out for a party (my tolerance for alcohol is incredibly high for a woman) so I'd think 710 calories is not bad, especially if you try to eat healthily for the rest of the day and also to not eat unhealthily the next coming days following the hangover.
Don't eat while you drink as it will only add to the calories and will make the buzz not come sooner. Your objective is to get a buzz, so mixing drinks is the way to go. It's not healthy to drink too much, but eh, be careful still... you don't wanna be rushed to the hospital for alcohol intoxication. You gotta slowly learn to see what your body like to drink. It takes me 4+ years to know what I like/don't like about drinking.
Alternatively, you can drink a bottle of champagne/wine for about 550 calories. It normally gets me drunk quickly. Good luck to you, and take it easy.
OP- Vodka and Gin are the best alcoholic drinks to mix to keep the calories down; this is becuase they are two liquors that don't use sugar in the production process. I tend to lead toward vodka mixed with water with a twist of lime or vodka with water and Mio water enhancer I have found to be good or crystal light but I have become a big fan of the vodka, water and Mio (fruit punch or berry pomegranate are my go to's)
I generally do flavored vodkas with club soda, and maybe a splash of cranberry or grape fruit juice. It took me a while to enjoy just vodka and soda water, but you get use to it, and fruity drinks gross me out now.
Wine is ok, just make sure you account for glass size---I've received goblets of wine at some places that definitely had about 8oz of wine in them.
Light beers are ok too.
"I've still got a lot of drinking to do"--try to relax, I get it you're in college...but you also have your entire adult life to enjoy cocktails.
Also--you really should eat when you drink, unless you want to be a sick mess at some point that night--choice is yours though.

Don't eat less if you know you're going to be out drinking. You need food so that you're not a vomiting mess after a night out. Vomit in your hair is way less sexy than eating pasta before you go out, trust me. Also, eating a big meal before you go out is actually a better idea, since when we've been drinking, we usually start craving fatty foods.

a bottle will cost you less than 500kcal. Ya just gotta plan ahead :P
But, on the real: wine is about 100-150kcal per 5oz pour versus the same amount in a 1oz shot of liquor which is usually mixed with other things with calories.
Also, not to be a downah but light beer a la "mjd 64" or whathaveyou taste a little like...death/pee/shame
Vanilla vodka and coke zero is actually delicious :)
My friends and I also like to mix crystal light packets into vodka and water - too bad you can't avoid the calorie in vodka.
Also, make sure you dance and move around a lot when you're out :)
